Water Supply: Damaged infrastructure impacts NID
Foothill Reservoirs Update
Situation: Severe damage to infrastructure owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) at Lake Spaulding effectively cut off water supplies to NID in 2024, and repairs continue in 2025 . The lack of access to normal watershed runoff meant last year the District had to rely upon limited water storage in Rollins and Scotts Flat reservoirs, and the waterbodies were drawn down to extremely low levels.
Current Status: Ongoing repairs at PG&E's Lake Spaulding facilities will have a severe impact on NID's water supply for the 2025 irrigation season. This will result in extremely low water levels in foothill reservoirs this summer. Rollins Reservoir will decline significantly by July, posing risks to both water supply and recreational activities. Scotts Flat Reservoir will decrease to drought-like levels seen in summer 2024.
Conservation by NID customers continues to be required
A call for mandatory water conservation of 20 percent will continue in 2025 until PG&E completes the infrastructure repairs and water will again flow reliably from Lake Spaulding through NID canals to Rollins and Scotts Flat reservoirs.
